FOURTY YOUNG PEOPLE BENEFIT FROM BAKING SKILLS PROGRAMME

FOURTY YOUNG PEOPLE BENEFIT FROM BAKING SKILLS PROGRAMME

In many rural communities, unemployment is a constant challenge, formal jobs are limited and young people struggle to find jobs. The lack of skills development continues to hinder sustainable development.

It is against this socio-economic problem that the Eastern Cape Department of Social Development in collaboration with Tsolo Agriculture and Rural Development Institute (TARDI) has, from 2025, trained and certified forty (40) young people in the province in Baking Skills Training programme. On conclusion of the training each participant is left with more than just knowledge, they are left with inspiration.

The seven-day training equips young people with various skills including baking and decorating cakes, biscuits and other bakery products. What began as a hands-on lesson in making baked goods became a powerful step towards self-empowerment especially for young people eager to build a better future.

The beneficiaries have expressed that the opportunity has improved their self-worth, has given them a focus and direction in life.

One of the beneficiaries from Alfred Nzo District, a 24-year-old Mandilakhe Khohlo said his plan is to have his own bakery or getting employed by local shops as a baker. I know this training is going to open doors for me. I have been unemployed for over a year now and when I heard about the training, I decided to grab the opportunity with both hands.”

Programme coordinator, Mbusi Khala from the Department of Social Development said beneficiaries from various rural communities in the province were chosen after thorough assessment to make sure they choose deserving young people.

The initiative forms part of the Department's ongoing commitment to empowering young people through skills development programmes that address unemployment and unlock economic opportunities, particularly in rural communities. As the country honours the legacy of the youth of 1976, programmes such as these continue to ensure that today's young people are equipped to shape a prosperous and self-reliant future.
