CHRIS HANI DESTITUTE HOUSING PROGRAMME RESTORES DIGNITY AND TRANSFORMS LIVES

The Eastern Cape Department of Human Settlements continues to transform lives through the Chris Hani Destitute Housing Programme, bringing hope and dignity to vulnerable households across the district. To date, R3.89 million has been invested in the project, reflecting government's commitment to improving the living conditions of destitute households and ensuring that no one is left behind.

Among the beneficiaries is Mzimkhulu Nelson Mbotshana, whose housing journey has been marked by years of hardship. He initially lived in a mud rondavel that had deteriorated over time and was no longer safe. He later moved into a flat house, but it too was in poor condition.

"I first lived in a rondavel, but it was no longer in a good condition. I then moved to a flat house, but it also had many challenges. I am grateful that I will finally have a proper house where I can live comfortably and with dignity," said Mbotshana.

Another beneficiary, Ndawoyakhe Mbotshana, expressed his gratitude for receiving a home through the programme.

"I am very thankful for this house. It means a lot to me and my family," he said.

His sister, Ntombencinci Mbotshana, became emotional as she reflected on her brother's living conditions before receiving the house.

"Our family including my brother were living in a rondavel with a damaged roof that leaked whenever it rained. We later moved into another rondavel that was better, however because were all women with him being a man, it was hard to share the space hence he opted to return to the raining one to spare us privacy. It was a very difficult living situation but now we are very happy that he has finally received a house of his own. We no longer have parents, and we come from a disadvantage background, so this house means everything to our family," she said.

The Mbotshanas are among 50 beneficiaries whose lives have been transformed through the Chris Hani Destitute Housing Programme.

Currently, 400 rural housing units are under construction in the Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality as part of a larger 1,300-unit housing project. The programme is restoring dignity to vulnerable families while creating employment opportunities and stimulating local economic development.

The Chris Hani Destitute Housing Programme continues to be a beacon of hope for rural communities, delivering safe and decent housing while building stronger and more resilient communities across the Eastern Cape.
