NEW COMMUNITY-OWNED TOURISM LODGE OPENS IN KWAMAQOMA, BRINGING JOBS AND BOOSTING RURAL ECONOMY

A new community-owned tourism facility officially opened in KwaMaqoma on Thursday, marking a major investment in rural tourism, job creation and inclusive economic development in the Eastern Cape. The Mthontsi Lodge and Conference Centre was officially opened by Deputy Minister of Tourism Makhotso Sotyu and Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane. The facility was developed through an investment of more than R31 million by the Department of Tourism under the Expanded Public Works Programme, with implementation by the Development Bank of Southern Africa.

The lodge features 13 chalets, backpackers' accommodation, conference facilities, a restaurant and other amenities capable of accommodating up to 52 guests. Government says the project created 28 jobs during construction and now supports 13 permanent employment opportunities. A key feature of the development is its community ownership model. The Mthontsi Waselukhuko Primary Co-operative will take ownership of the facility once the land transfer process has been completed, allowing the local community to directly benefit from tourism activity generated by the lodge.

Speaking at the official opening, Premier Mabuyane said the investment demonstrates government's commitment to using tourism as a catalyst for economic growth and rural development. "The opening of this facility affirms that tourism remains one of the key drivers of economic growth, job creation and rural development in our province. This investment is about more than infrastructure, it is about creating opportunities for our people and ensuring that communities become active participants in the tourism economy," he said. He added that the project illustrates how land reform, supported by investment and effective community leadership, can deliver sustainable economic opportunities.

Situated along one of South Africa's historic liberation routes, the Mthontsi Lodge and Conference Centre offers visitors access to the Eastern Cape's cultural heritage, historical attractions and natural landscapes. The facility will strengthen the province's growing rural tourism sector while attracting more domestic and international visitors.

The opening of the lodge also advances commitments made by the Provincial Government during the 2026 State of the Province Address to expand tourism infrastructure, support township and rural tourism enterprises, and position the Eastern Cape as a globally competitive tourism destination.

With its combination of accommodation, conferencing facilities and community ownership, the Mthontsi Lodge and Conference Centre is set to become an important tourism asset for the Amathole District and a catalyst for economic growth in KwaMaqoma and surrounding rural communities.
