BUFFALO CITY METRO OFFICIALLY OPENS GALWAY ROAD FOLLOWING R12M UPGRADE

The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality has officially opened the upgraded Galway Road crossing in Nahoon, KuGompo City. With a cost of R12 million through the Disaster Grant Programme, the project was implemented in response to the severe flooding that struck parts of the metro in June 2024, damaging critical infrastructure and disrupting traffic movement in surrounding communities.

The newly completed development includes a modern all-weather road and culvert structure designed to improve traffic flow, enhance pedestrian safety, and better manage water movement along the Inhlanza Stream. The previous crossing had become increasingly vulnerable to extreme weather conditions and was no longer capable of accommodating growing traffic volumes in the area.

The upgraded infrastructure now restores the important connection between Galway Road and Mackenzie Street while providing a more durable and flood-resilient transport link for residents, businesses, and road users. Buffalo City Metro Executive Mayor Councillor Princess Faku handed over the Galway Road back to the community following its closure due to the upgrades that started in June 2025

Mayor Faku said that the project forms part of broader municipal interventions aimed at improving service delivery and protecting communities against the impact of climate-related disasters.

The municipality also expressed appreciation to residents, businesses, and motorists for their patience and cooperation during the construction phase, acknowledging the role of community support in ensuring the successful completion of the project.

The reopening of the Galway Road crossing is expected to significantly improve mobility, safety, and infrastructure reliability for the Nahoon community and surrounding areas. This marks a significant milestone in the municipality s ongoing efforts to strengthen infrastructure resilience and improve public safety.
