The Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality (BCMM) has recorded notable progress in the implementation of the Cambridge West Housing Project, a multi-million-rand development aimed at restoring dignity and providing secure housing to victims of the former Ciskei National Independent Party (CNIP) administration.
This catalytic project, located in Ward 16, is a key redress intervention targeting approximately 275 verified beneficiary households, primarily from Mdantsane, who were previously dispossessed of their homes under the former Ciskei government. Following an extensive verification process undertaken by the Provincial Department of Human Settlements and Traditional Affairs, the project has now moved into full implementation.
To date, the development has achieved critical infrastructure milestones, including the completion of internal roads, curbs and stormwater channelling, as well as the installation of water and sanitation services. Construction of top structures is well underway, with several housing units already completed and others progressing steadily marking a significant step forward in delivering sustainable human settlements.
As part of ongoing monitoring and evaluation efforts, the Executive Mayor of BCMM, Cllr Princess Faku, led an oversight visit to the site on 05 May 2026, accompanied by Members of the Mayoral Committee (MMCs) and senior municipal officials.
The CNIP Victims Housing Project continues to stand as a critical programme of redress, addressing historical injustices while restoring dignity and improving the quality of life for affected families.
During the visit, Executive Mayor Faku expressed satisfaction with the progress achieved, highlighting the project as a clear demonstration of government s commitment to meaningful transformation and spatial justice.
This project stands as a beacon of hope and a practical response to the injustices of the past. While we cannot undo history, we are resolute in our efforts to build sustainable human settlements that restore dignity and provide security of tenure for our people,” said Executive Mayor Faku.
In addition to housing delivery, the project is contributing to local economic development through the creation of employment opportunities and the inclusion of local labour, in line with BCMM s objective of promoting inclusive growth and community participation.
Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality remains committed to accelerating the delivery of integrated and sustainable human settlements, ensuring that all residents have access to adequate housing in well-planned and dignified communities.
