Alfred Nzo District Municipality Executive Mayor Cllr. Tsileng Sobuthongo officially launched a R95 million water refurbishment project which will bring reliable, clean water to Rhwantsana, Mhleleni, Nkumba & Lugangatho villages. The long-anticipated refurbishment of the Mhleleni Water Project marks a key milestone in efforts to improve access to clean water in rural parts of the Eastern Cape.
The project which is set to take place over the next 24 months will see the refurbishment and construction of bulk water infrastructure designed to convey raw water from the Umzimvubu River to the Mhleleni Water Treatment Works. The intervention is expected to significantly improve the reliability and quality of water supply in the area.
The project demonstrates a firm commitment to addressing long-standing water challenges and improving service delivery. Once completed, the initiative will benefit approximately 500 households, reaching an estimated population of 3,000 people in that area.
"This is about your basic right to water," said Executive Mayor Tsileng Sobuthongo. "We ask the community to work with us and the contractors to ensure this project finishes on time, so that every home can benefit as soon as possible."
In addition to improving water access, it is expected to create employment opportunities for residents, providing a much-needed economic boost in the district. Community members welcomed the development, expressing optimism that the project will bring lasting relief to persistent water shortages and improve daily living conditions.
The initiative signals the start of accelerated construction activities, with the municipality reaffirming its commitment to delivering sustainable infrastructure that meets the needs of its communities.
