FREEDOM MONTH INITIATIVE SEES MEC SIPHOKAZI LUSITHI PROVIDE 20 HOMES TO VULNERABLE CALA FAMILIES

In a powerful Freedom Month reminder that housing is about more than walls and roofs, Siphokazi Lusithi stepped into Cala on Monday to hand over 20 newly built homes, each one a fresh start for families who have long lived on the margins.

Set within the Sakhisizwe Local Municipality, the handover showed more than a ceremonial moment but a statement of freedom, right to housing with dignity, safety, and hope to those not privileges. MEC Lusithi captured this sentiment clearly, emphasizing that these homes are safe spaces for our children” and a step toward ensuring that the most vulnerable especially child-headed households are not forgotten.

One story stood out among many. Eighteen-year-old Endinako Mayongo, along with her younger siblings, finally has a place to call home. After years in a fragile mud structure and the heartbreak of losing their mother in 2021, the family s new house marks a turning point. Their aunt, Nodumo Mayongo, who has been their pillar of support, described the moment as a dream,” a shift from hardship to dignity.

These 20 homes are part of the ambitious Cala 1284 Rural Housing Project; a sweeping initiative aimed at uplifting vulnerable families across 21 villages. With just 47 houses left to complete, the finish line is in sight. Once done, 1,284 homes will stand as a testament to transformation, turning struggle into stability for hundreds of families.

In Cala, bricks and mortar have become something far greater; the foundation of restored dignity, renewed hope, and futures rebuilt.
