MAKANA LOCAL MUNICIPALITY IMPROVES LOCAL ROAD NETWORK

MAKANA LOCAL MUNICIPALITY IMPROVES LOCAL ROAD NETWORK

Road infrastructure remains a key priority for municipalities, given its vital role in driving economic development, enhancing social connectivity, and enabling effective service delivery. Makana Municipality continues to make steady progress in improving the local road network to ensure better access to employment opportunities, schools, healthcare facilities, and to support the growth of local businesses.

Significant strides are being made across Makhanda, where several road rehabilitation projects are currently underway. Under the Disaster Recovery Project, 11 streets are being rehabilitated, including Struben and Linney Streets, Smith and Vogt Streets, Irving Street, K Street (joining P Street), Tumbler Street, Hobson Street, B Street, Mbombela Street (Extension 4), Ngcuka Street (Extension 9), Lamani Street (joining N Street), and Hill Street, which will be repaired and overlaid with asphalt. The remaining streets will be upgraded using interlocking block paving, alongside improvements to stormwater drainage systems.

An investment of R29.11 million has been allocated to this Disaster Project. Since its commencement in March 2025, the project has created employment opportunities for six (06) local residents and is scheduled for completion by March 2026, with an extension granted until the end of June 2026.

Several projects have already been successfully completed, including Albert Street in Fingo Village, Phase 1 of Makana Way in Joza, and upgrades to M Street and Sani Street. Work is currently underway on Phase 2 of Makana Way, which will enhance road conditions in Extension 8, Extension 9, and Joza. This phase includes rehabilitation along Ncede Street, from Pikoko Street to the Nompondo/Nxanxadi intersection, Nompondo Street to Ncame Street, and Nxanxadi Street to Hlosi Street.

In addition, progress continues under the Small Towns Revitalisation Programme. Milner Street has been completed, upgrades to the High Street traffic circle are in progress, and work on African Street is set to commence. Makana Municipality remains committed to upgrading and maintaining road infrastructure across its jurisdiction.
