The Eastern Cape government s vision for the province to become a green hub for SA and ensure that local manufacturers adhere to strict global green standards, is taking shape. To that effect there are wind projects, worth R18.8bn, that will produce 850 megawatts (MW) of power, currently under construction in the province.
A further 615MW of wind projects will be completed this year. These include the Umoyilanga hybrid project in Kariega, the Impofu wind project in Kouga, Coleskop wind project near Middleburg and Wolf Wind farms in Jansenville. Premier Oscar Mabuyane said these projects would entrench the province s role as a leading generator of clean energy for the national grid.
He said the Hive Green Hydrogen Project to produce green ammonia also received its environmental authorisation, which was a major milestone towards the realisation of one of the biggest projects in the province.
Coega s 100MW solar plant was approved as one of the seven projects by Infrastructure South Africa. This project will ensure that Coega has the required energy security for its investors. We can report to the people of the province that the signing and launch of the Coega Liquified Natural Gas Import Terminal will be realised within the first quarter of 2026.
This is a multibillion-rand infrastructure project involving Transnet, the SA National Petroleum Agency and Tamasa Energy,” Mabuyane said. Government is harnessing these resources with innovation that is guided by ecologically sustainable development, so that oil and gas become a powerful engine of inclusive economic growth, industrial diversification and job creation for SA, with the Eastern Cape leading from the front.
Mabuyane said Eskom was consulting critical stakeholders in the Nelson Mandela Bay metro and Sarah Baartman municipality on the process of building a nuclear power station at Thyspunt, close to Humansdorp. This is part of a R300bn SA nuclear energy programme that carries enormous business opportunities for the province.
It will also ensure energy security for the Eastern Cape and lower the cost of electricity for the people. I appeal to all the people of the Eastern Cape to throw their weight behind this project. We want this nuclear power station here in our province,” he said.
