The Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality, under the leadership of Mayor Siyabulela Zangqa, has officially introduced appointed contractors for critical bridge protection works in Mgwali Lucwecwe, Mgwali Lahlangubo and Qengqeleka Mqonci Bridge to the community of Ngcobo.
The engagement, attended by municipal leadership and officials from the Department of Transport, marks a significant milestone in the Municipality s ongoing programme to strengthen infrastructure resilience and improve access to essential services across the Ngcobo community.
The scope of work includes road re-gravelling, construction of wing walls, installation of culverts, stone pitching, approach slabs, erosion protection measures and backfilling with approved quality material to ensure long-term structural stability. All three projects are expected to be completed within three months.
Mayor Zangqa highlighted the importance of reliable infrastructure in improving the daily lives of residents. These bridge protection works are not just construction projects, but a direct response to the needs of our communities. They are about ensuring safe access to schools, clinics and other essential services, especially during adverse weather conditions,” said Mayor Zangqa.
In addition to improving safety, the projects are expected to create employment opportunities, empower local businesses and contribute to the overall socio-economic development of the community.
The bridge protection works are being implemented through a collaborative partnership between the Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality and the Department of Transport, in line with the District Development Model. Through closer intergovernmental cooperation and aligned implementation efforts, the partnership seeks to ensure that infrastructure projects are delivered more efficiently and in a manner that responds directly to the needs and development priorities of local communities.
