International Day of Older Persons Provincial Celebrations in Sterkspruit
The Eastern Cape Provincial Government, led by Social Development MEC, Bukiwe Fanta on behalf of Premier Mabuyane, hosted the provincial celebrations to mark the International Day of Older Persons (IDOP) in Sterkspruit.

This year s Provincial Commemoration of International Day of Older Persons is hosted under the theme The Resilience and Contributions of Older Women . International days are occasions to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems, and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity.

This day was observed for the first time on October 1, 1991.The International Day for Older Person s is celebrated by raising awareness on issues affecting older persons, such as poverty, violation of the rights of Older Persons, challenges that Older Persons face in society including elder abuse. It is also a day to appreciate the contributions that older people make to society. South Africa celebrates this commemorative day annually and it is usually preceded by Older Persons Focus Week which takes place during the last week of September annually

This year s theme also serves as a hallmark and reminder of the significant role older women play in traversing global challenges and contributing to their solutions with resilience and fortitude. Recognizing the vital contributions of older women and promoting the inclusion of their voices, perspectives and needs are critical to creating meaningful policies to enhance a holistic response to local, national, and global challenges and catastrophes.
