Eastern Cape Premier, Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane, addressed the Provincial Summit on Gender-Based Violence and Femicide (GBVF) at the East London International Convention Centre. The two-day Summit took place over two days and provided an opportunity for a collaborative engagement between stakeholders including government, traditional and religious leaders, the Eastern Cape Moral Regeneration Movement, Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), Men for Change, political leaders and civil society formations among others.
Hosted under the theme: Accountability, Acceleration and Amplification Now, it discussed and identified strategies on strengthening the overall response to GBVF and prevention in the Eastern Cape. Commissions deliberated and tabled reports on the progress that has been taken thus far to fight this pandemic. They also addressed the current statistics and policies on GBVF to formulate strategic actions that will strengthen and resource the institutions that have been set up to address the problems of GBVF.
As part of his opening remarks, Eastern Cape Premier Lubabalo Oscar Mabuyane said, The fight against GBVF is not an event but a process. All of us must dedicate ourselves to the work of ending this scourge. The work of this summit is to ensure that our province communicates a coherent message at the national summit so that after the national summit focus can be invested on implementation of plans”.
