MAYORS TO ENHANCE GOOD GOVERNANCE AND SUSTAINABILITY

MAYORS TO ENHANCE GOOD GOVERNANCE AND SUSTAINABILITY
September 8th, 2022 marks the second and last day of the South African Local Government Association (SALGA) Council of Mayors Conference held at the East London International Convention Centre in the Eastern Cape.

President Cyril Ramaphosa addressed the attendees at the conference and emphasised that mayors and executive mayors should serve the communities with honesty, diligence and selflessness.
"Local government should adhere to basic actions such as putting people and their concerns first, supporting the delivery of municipal services to the right quality and standard, promoting good governance, transparency and accountability " President said.
Among other things, the newly elected mayors and executive mayors should rise to the challenge of changing the narrative regarding the image, the standing and reputation of municipalities.
Mayors and executive mayors should also appoint professional and competent managers to run municipal administrations.
"We urge local businesses and residents to support local government. We also urge consumers to pay for the services they receive so that municipalities are able to collect revenue, meet their debt obligations, and provide quality services to communities" President alluded.
