In an effort to invest in sports development and provision of adequate sport facilities in rural communities; the Eastern Cape government has handed over a newly built multi – purpose sports stadium at Cacadu in Emalahleni Local Municipality recently.
Cacadu Stadium boosts a variety of sporting codes facilities which include a running track, netball field, rugby and a soccer field with grand stands.
Reflecting on the hand - over of the stadium Department of Sports, Recreation, Arts and Culture MEC Fezeka Nkomonye said government is encouraging local municipalities to invest in sport facilities because they contribute towards economic development through sports tourism.
She further stated that the stadium will enable and encourage the people of the area especially the youth to participate in sport and nurture them to be future sports champions. “Sport is one way of taking the young people out of criminal activities so that they can be able to showcase their talents.” MEC Nkomonye said.
The stadium will also benefit local heroes in the form of AB Motsepe Soccer League team Amavarara Football Club; based in the area. MEC Nkomonye made a call to local communities to take care of the facility so that teams like Amavarara may not only train in the stadium, but also play matches as people of the area love sport. This will also help in bringing in investment in the area.
MEC Nkomonye also handed over R70 000 worth of sporting equipment to the local teams. Cacadu Stadium is part of the R50 million government infrastructucture investment unveiled by Eastern Cape Government the Emalahleni Local Munipality in Chris Hani District.
